Coast Guard, fishing industry representatives to speak about Safe Catch

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads invites media members to speak with Coast Guard and fishing industry leaders about Operation Safe Catch at B&C Seafood in Newport News at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

WHAT
Operation Safe Catch is a 5th-district-wide effort to improve commercial fishing safety from North Carolina to New Jersey, involving at-sea and dockside safety inspections and education of the commercial fishing community.

WHO
Capt. John Little, deputy commander of Sector Hampton Roads, will provide detailed explanations of what the operation is, who is involved, why the Coast Guard is doing it, and what it means for the Hampton Roads area.

William Gilbert, chief of the uninspected vessels branch at Sector Hampton Roads, will explain the regulations that the operation will involve, including what inspectors will be looking for during vessel examinations.

William Mullis, owner of B&C Seafood, will give the fishing industry's perspective on working on fishing boats in hazardous conditions and what the industry has done to improve safety.
